Pentiuc, Archbishop Demetrios Professor of Biblical Studies and Early Christianity and Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, was the main speaker at two recent academic events. From October 19-21, the ROOTS International Old Testament Symposium, organized by the Orthodox School of Theology of Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania, held its annual conference via Zoom.   • DR. DOVA HEADLINES SICILY CONFERENCE

    Dr. Stamatia Dova, Director of Classics and Greek Studies at Hellenic College, traveled to Sicily to deliver the opening keynote address at the “Homer in Sicily” conference sponsored by the Fonte Aretusa Organization. The conference was held October 5-8 at the Exedra Mediterranean Center on the island of Ortigia, the ancient heart of Syracuse (Siracusa), just off the Sicilian mainland.  The goal of the conference was to bring together scholars from a variety of disciplines to discuss Homer’s epic vision of Sicily and to visit the archaeological traces of the mythic places and beings of the Odyssey.   • HOLY CROSS HOSTS CONFERENCE ON THE GOA AT 100

    On October 6 and 7, 2022, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology hosted a conference with the theme "The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America at 100 Years." The conference was organized by V. Rev. Archimandrite Anton Vrame and Dr. James Skedros, both of whom also presented papers. The first day of the conference, held at HCHC's Maliotis Cultural Center, featured daytime panel discussions, moderated by Holy Cross faculty, on governance issues of the GOA, its ministries, its Archbishops from Alexander to Demetrios, and issues of acculturation.     Hellenic College Holy Cross had an active presence at the 25th International Congress of the Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches held in Belgrade, Serbia, from September 26-30, 2022. Participants included Holy Cross alumni V. Rev. Fr. Bartholomew Mercado, Chaplain and Instructor of Canon Law at HCHC, who serves as Secretary General of the Society and was a co-organizer of the Congress, and Rev. Fr.     On September 23, His Grace Bishop Joachim of Amissos, Director of HCHC's Archbishop Iakovos Library, presented a public lecture at Dumbarton Oaks, the Harvard Center for Byzantine Studies in Washington, DC, entitled "The Image of the Mother of God on Byzantine Lead Seals: Ubiquitous Presence/Rare Selection." It was Dumbarton Oaks’ first in-person lecture since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
